Para-Sport EventSeptember 17th, 2015
On Tuesday 7th October 2014 a Para- sport event was put in place for both mainstream and specialist schools such as, Abbs Cross, Albany, Bower Park, Corbets Tey, Drapers Academy, Hall Mead, Ravensbourne and Redden Court.
This was a fantastic event run by the Havering Sports Collective and the Havering Health and Sports Development. The aim of the day was to educate teachers and to enable students to enjoy a wide range of disabled sporting activities such as; seated volleyball, seated curling, Boccia, goalball and many others.
The feedback from teachers was positive. They described the event as “a chance for the children to show their potential”, “an inspirational day”, “an opportunity for them to participate in sporting activities”, “it gives us more knowledge on what to do with equipment they have and how to conduct it into activities”.
The students had a positive outlook on the day expressing which sports they liked and how they enjoyed learning new sports.
To finalise this incredible day we were honoured by Amy Marren’s presence. Amy is the 2012 Paralympic, European and World champion in para-swimming (sprint SM9 swimmer). Amy described the day as “one of a kind” as when she was aged 11-14, she never had these opportunities. Amy said she would like to volunteer for one of these events to see how much fun the children could have again through more varied sports.
